The unusual history of La Honda Winery
The name ‘La Honda Winery’ arises from the bucolic, pastoral, and some might say infamous mountain town of La Honda where the winery grows its estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. Our estate vineyards are located just east of the well-known ‘Red Barn’ on the north side of twisting, snaking Highway 84 (also known as Woodside Road), and just west of Alice’s Restaurant on Highway 84 Skyline Road in Woodside.
But the La Honda Winery is located in Redwood City. Here, our warm and inviting winery combines old world craftsmanship with modern winemaking to yield wines of subtleness and grace. Our urban location provides a convenient and accessible location to produce the wine, receive guests, and entertain. La Honda Winery’s vineyard management company, Post & Trellis Vineyards, manages over thirty spectacular private estate vineyards throughout the Santa Cruz Mountains. Each vineyard is sustainably farmed. Every farming practice we employ is deliberate and intended to enrich the vineyard soil and the immediate environment. No heavy equipment ever enters our vineyards. Every vineyard is harvested by hand in small bins, and every lot is meticulously hand-sorted to assure mature, luscious, clean fruit.
With a devout focus on our locally-grown sustainable vineyards, La Honda Winery has earned a long list of medals and accolades - including Best-of-Class and Double-Gold medals from the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, and many more from equally famous competitions, events, and blogs.
As the venerable Wine Spectator magazine said, the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation is “the most underappreciated appellation in the world.” Conditions in the Santa Cruz Mountains are exceptional and unrivaled. Grapes grown in the rugged soils of the coastal mountains lead to complex character and concentrated flavors. Steep slopes, shallow soils, and the coastal range environment create challenging and demanding conditions. These conditions yield fruit and wines that are delicious, captivating, and full of personality.
